The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu (WSU), the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), and partners invite applications for the Annual Young Scientists’ Conference 2026, which will take place from 13–15 September 2026 at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, Mthatha Campus, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Conference Theme

Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063

The 2026 AYSC is aligned with the African Union’s 2026 theme, which places sustainable water availability and safe sanitation at the centre of Africa’s development agenda. The theme recognises the critical role of water and sanitation in economic transformation, climate resilience, public health, food security, environmental sustainability and regional stability.

The conference will provide a dynamic platform for early-career researchers to present their work, exchange ideas, build interdisciplinary networks and contribute science-based solutions to pressing societal challenges. The AYSC also promotes mentorship, collaboration, peer learning and engagement between emerging researchers and established experts.

Conference Sub-themes

Applicants are invited to submit abstracts aligned with one or more of the following sub-themes:

1. Water Resources and Infrastructure

This sub-theme focuses on water quantity and quality, investment in infrastructure, innovative technologies, equitable access to safe drinking water and sanitation systems, and the role of fit-for-purpose water in sustaining ecosystems, human well-being and economies.

2. Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability

This sub-theme focuses on adaptive strategies, nature-based solutions, resilient communities and sustainable water systems in the context of climate variability and environmental change.

3. Inclusive Development, Innovation and Cooperation

This sub-theme promotes the custodianship of water and sanitation systems by local communities, including the integration of indigenous and local knowledge systems, inclusive decision-making, and gender-responsive water and sanitation planning and management.
